Wine Blogging Wednesday #32: April 11

Hey Gang!
The Wine Cask Blog is happy to be hosting Wine Blogging Wednesday #32.
Reviews will be posted/hosted starting on Wednesday April 11, 2007 for any early birds. Please get your reviews to us as early as possible so posting can begin on April 11. (send URLs of your reviews to serona -at- gmail -dot- com and include a subject of WBW 32)

And now for the theme:
SHOWDOWN: Regular vs Reserve

It's time to determine if the "reserves" are really that much better. So get two bottles, same vineyard/winery same vintage but have one be the "regular" version and have one be the "reserve" label (different "levels" of the wine are fine as many "reserves" are not actually labeled as such). Compare them. What makes the reserve wine better? Is it even worth it? Please don't go overboard on pricing as some reserves can get spendy. The Wine Cask Blog is about accessibility to the world of wine and part of accessibility is price. You could even pair up with another wine blogger and one of you do the regular and the other do the reserve.

Reviews should include:
The wines reviewed (name, region, vintage)
Price
Characteristics of the wines
An opinion of which was "better" based on whatever criteria you want

I will have a synopsis of the reviews and links to your blog posted starting Wednesday April 11.

  2. RULES & Instructions
Please join us in WBW 32! No need to sign up, just make a "regular vs reserve" post on your blog sometime near April 11. By April 8 (easter) send me the link to your post. I'll include it in the WBW roundup!

Does it have to be specifically "reserve," or can it be two levels of wine by the same producer? For example, a Burgundy village wine and a 1er Cru from the same producer. Many of the wines I drink don't use that terminology...

Great theme! I hope to find some samples when I'm in California next week.

My only question is, if we're supposed to blog about the wines on Wednesday, why the prior Sunday deadline? :-) Seriously, since I get back in town on the 7th and don't know what Internet access I may or may not have next week, will you accept slightly late entries?

  5. I agree with Bill, the event is on Wednesday (thus the name)... your round-up can be posted after Wednesday, like all the rest of us have done.

    An interesting theme; thanks!

  6. To echo previous comments, please do not make Sunday the deadline. Deadlines are always Wednesday. Posts go up after Wednesday. Also, any responses to Brooklynguy?

  7. POSTS CAN BE SUBMITTED ON WEDNESDAY. AND THE ROUNDUP WILL BE POSTED / UPDATED STARTING WEDNESDAY AS WELL.

    EARLY POSTS APPRECIATED ;)

BROOKLYNGUY: TWO LEVELS ARE OK IF YOU CAN MAKE THE CASE THAT THE LEVELS OF WINE ARE DIFFERENT.

  8. I am gonna have to go with Brooklynguy - two levels, same grape, vintage, winery. I will be early, Cheers!

I have tasted both the Reserve and the regular Rosemount, albeit not on the same day. I really could not tell any appreciable difference although it was on different dates, certainly not enough to be noticeable, especially for $5 or so more per bottle! Next up the Columbia Crest Reserve to be compared to the regular. The only difference I have only seen the Reserve in 2002 vintage so far. I have tried many a bottle of the 2003 regular Columbia Crest, a great value and a decent wine!

  10. Great idea... we just had the Jacobs Creek 2004 Shiraz Reserve and would love to review that vs the regular Jacobs Creek if it's not too late.

    is it too late?
